ELECTION DAY: GET OUT THE VOTE.

(If you’ve been following my blog rabidly, you could swear this post keeps moving. Yes. It does, and Tuesday, it will disappear. Because of the IMPORTANCE of this election, I’ve been keeping it within one post of the top, and since election day is Monday/Today, I think it’s imperative people get off their apathetic asses and vote. It’s your COUNTRY. SPEAK. BE HEARD.)

Anyone who reads this knows I am a passionate Canadian, and this is addressed to my fellow country(wo)men.

Canada has a proud legacy of personal freedoms and social compassion. Don’t fuck that up by voting for the Conservative Party TODAY (Monday).

Gay marriage deserves to stay just as it it. My dear friend GayBoy has it right. Harper’s wish to change it to a “civil union,” to appease the religious types, means gays will NOT be equal. Changing the name isn’t just a technicality, it’s a statement. “You’re (not really) equal. (We’re placating you, you silly faggots and dykes.)”

Harper wanted us to go to Iraq. He has gone on record in front of American Republicans telling them their accomplishments are “admirable.” Take a look at the so-called “moral compass” of the United States right now, and decide if that’s who you want your nation’s leader to be emulating. I sure as fuck don’t.

I am Canadian to my fucking core. I live and die with the Maple Leaf. My life will cease within the borders of this hallowed land of mine, though I want to see the world around me, because this is my land. I’m proud of our human rights stance, I’m proud of the things my country stands for. I will not, cannot vote with my wallet. I abhor the idea of people voting the Conservative agenda in because they want a tax cut.

Tell me, those tax savings of yours — are they worth the price you’ll pay when it comes to saying you no longer live in one of the most free nations in the world? Certainly we have greater freedom than our American friends.

Harper wants you to vote the Liberals out because of the “corruption” scandal. Oh, and that always works. When will we fucking learn? Are we children? “We’re mad at them. FUCK them. We want the other guy!” The other guy comes in, and fucks us over worse. The Conservatives wrote the book on corruption scandals. “Airbus,” anyone? How about a side of Pot/Kettle/Black?

Yeah, the Liberals proved to be corrupt, but that’s because Chretien was an arrogant prick. I think Martin’s learned his lesson, was exonerated, and now they, as a party, have something to prove. Let them prove it.

Or vote NDP. Or vote Green. But Liberal is more likely to defeat a possibility of a Harper minority government. I don’t want the Conservatives ruling my life, I don’t want to lose freedoms to a guy on a crusade to be the moral arbitrator of this nation.

Whatever the fuck you do, EXERCISE DEMOCRACY. Get off your ass, park your apathy, and have a fucking voice. Democracy isn’t something that just happens. You don’t get to piss and moan unless you get involved. Earn your voice. Flex it. Check the goddamned paper box, and be a citizen. I’m sick and goddamned tired of people thinking voting is an inconvenience. It’s a privilege. Embrace it. Christ. Is it really so fucking hard? (/end rant)

Yes Vote indeed. Support on your post….Will not be voting Bloc either…But we will get off our asses on Monday and vote not Harper.

DH — Yeah, if I see one more fluffy shot of him throwing snowballs and looking amenable, I’m gonna puke in my cheerios. Sigh. Conservatives aren’t the devil, but it’s when they’re as religious as Harper that it freaks me out. Church and state can be a horrifying combination, I don’t care what people say.

JAG — And I would expect nothing less from a fine citizen like you. ๐Ÿ™‚

Stephen Harper is the devil in my opinion! Though shamefully admit that I don’t inform myself as much as I should re: our parties/politics – I am able to recognize what is good for my country and what is bad.

So there was a tiny sponsorship scandal! *gasp* a scandal in politics? you don’t say! The liberals has been doing a relatively decent job over the past decade – I’m not about to kick them out.

I’m definitely putting my vote in on monday – because I do not want to see this country go to Hell in a handbasket – carried by Mr “civil union my ass” Harper.

I shall be voting in AND work for the election, which, apart from the extra cash, gives me a peek at how my riding votes.

I grew up a die-hard Liberal, even met Jean Chretien when he spoke at my high school when he was first elected! (exciting for me at the time) But these past two elections have started to turn me off of them. “Sometimes you need to fall so you can learn to pick yourself up again” My old boss from Starbucks said that to me once, and I believe it holds true for the Liberals in this election. Some of the Liberal MP’S I hold a great deal of respect for (Hedy Fry, Ujall Dosanj) to name a couple, but most of them just seem to be following the herd…..no passion. I will most likely be voting NDP this year, BC looks to be a goner for most of the Liberals 22 seats and I sure as hell don’t want Harper’s gang moving in. The NDP have the most to gain from the Liberals downfall in my province, and it hopefully will make Harper’s reign as PM a monority one.

GayBoy– if you’re not hooking up with Ze Lover Man tonight, we should have a melancholy martini or two at the bar. Martini Madness tonight, you know. Potentially our last Liberal drink for a few years?

  6. GayBoy

Alas….I close tonight then open tomorrow morning, which equalls less than five hours nap time, maybe sunday night?

It’s a date. Canadian’s on special, fitting, before the election. And pizza!

And yes, I did agree with everything you wrote. I don’t know about voting NDP. I kind of like the financial track the Liberals are on, and I believe their reigning in of the debt will allow for more expenditures as a new term would progress.

    Fucking Harper.

I think voting for all levels of government should be mandatory, just like the cencus and every ballot should include a box that says “None of the above.” Can you imagine the change in the political landscape? (in the last municipal election here only 20% bothered to vote). In countries where this policy was first introduced, “none of the above” carried the day in many ridings and none of those people could run in the bi-election. After a few elections, the electorate made the effort to be more informed and candidates made an effort to be more in touch and now it’s rare that “none of the above” wins.

I absolutely agree! Vote! I am a staunch liberal, but for the first tiem every I am voting NDP (shudder) because the liberal candidate in my riding hasn’t got a chance — it’s a race between the conservative and NDP candidates. And my last Conservative MP was such a stand-up guy. Remember Grumant Grewal?

    Well said, Kurtz.

You passed me on Marine as you were scooting home! I was just heading out on a bike ride down Kent, past Knight. Gonna buzz you. Beers sound awesome now. Too bad they don’t make that Taco Pizza anymore… Banana pepper/Sicilian will have to do. ๐Ÿ˜›
