When Hope Fails

Thoughts in the Night About How We Got Here

I can’t believe how wrong I was. Kamala lost. I’ve stopped reading about it.

Once Russians started doing bomb scares to interfere with voting precincts, I started to get worried. It only needed a few points here and there. Throw in white supremacy and some ignorant people voting, it’s easy to find oneself in the thick of a burgeoning autocracy.

What comes next… I’m trying not to think about.

But what I wanted to say is this:

Since my childhood in the ‘80s, they’ve been defunding the arts, education, anything cultural, anything civic.

They want a less-educated, less-informed electorate that doesn’t recognize history because they don’t know history.

The real truth is, there are evil people out there. Sure. But most people are just too stupid and naive to believe someone like Trump for their word. The uneducated were his largest voting block. They all think he’s a showman.

They simply don’t believe Trump will do what he says. After all, most of the time, he doesn’t. Except when he makes it a crime for women to control their own bodies, and things like that,

So here we are. Dark times to come. A different world to unfold. A new fight to begin, new lessons to learn.

It’s nearly 3:30 and I need to sleep, but let me leave you with a quick thought of what I learned from bullet holes in walls in Europe:

History is complicated. Full of darkness, struggles. But also of oppressors vanquished, regimes overthrown, new ages dawning.

Humanity is capable of terrible evils but also glorious victories.

This story is far from written. Don’t give up, don’t give in. Deep breaths.

[I wrote this at 3:30 after a lot of weed and a not-effective sleeping pill, so if there are mistakes, or I worded something poorly, then such is life when lost in existential ennui and a purple haze. So it goes.]
